Looks like I spoke too soon, the NFL announced today that they will kick off their season on Thursday, September 1, the same night McCain is to give his acceptance speech.

ESPN says that the game will start 90 minutes earlier though, to make room for the convention.

Politico says:

But given that it pits the world champion New York Giants versus America's team, the Washingotn Redskins, Republicans can't be happy about what will inevitably distract attention from the penultimate night of their convention.

The fates have fallen--or been placed--where they may. Now I guess we just roll with it.
