Dr. James Dobson, founder and Chairman of Focus on the Family, endorsed Huckabee for president. Dobson has let his feelings be known about John McCain and looks to Huckabee to carry the conservative banner. Dobson's endorsement will no doubt help Huckabee in upcoming primaries inSouthern states like Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana.
In his statement Dobson said:
"His unwavering positions on the social issues, notably the institution of marriage, the importance of faith and the sanctity of human life, resonate deeply with me and with many others. That is why I will support Gov. Huckabee through the remaining primaries, and will vote for him in the general election if he should get the nomination. "
Dobson also said that he couldn't endorse a candidate while both Romney and Huckabee were in the race, but now that Romney is out, it cleared the way for his "personal" endorsement (Dobson cannot endorse on behalf of Focus on the Family due to the organizations tax exempt status). Party stalwarts are usually upset with Dobson, who regularly threatens to leave the GOP and take his followers with him if he doesn't get what he wants.
With the Primaries in Kansas, Louisiana and Washington on February 9th, we will see if Dobson's endorsement rallies the evangelical base or falls flat on its face.
